Cycling around Moffat

The area around Moffat is a fantastic location for serious cyclists – the steep hills which surround the town provide a rugged and challenging terrain for the experienced biker.

For families and the leisure cyclist, there are a number of more sedate cycling routes along some of Moffat’s old country roads, giving you many places to stop, rest and take in the stunning scenery of the Moffat Hills. For more gentle cycling, Moffat has the advantage of being close to National Cycle Route 74, running from Carlisle to South Lanarkshire along quiet roads adjacent to the M74. Route 74 also links to the Southern Upland Way, Britain’s first coast-to-coast long-distance footpath. Or why not pick up the trail to Moffat on local Cycle Route 10 which runs along minor and forest roads to Beattock and Moffat from Heathhall in Dumfries at the northern end of the Caledonian Cycle Route? Don’t forget the challenge of off-roading on the world famous 7stanes Mountain Bike Trails, which span the whole of the South of Scotland! Why not use Moffat as the perfect base to test your MBT skills at the nearby Ae or Mabie Trails? However you choose to do it, you’ll see Moffat and the surrounding countryside at its best from two wheels.
